What makes your chickens different from regular market chickens?

Our chickens are indigenous Indian breeds raised using traditional methods. They have several advantages over commercial broiler chickens:

  • Higher protein content (up to 25% more)
  • Lower fat content
  • More distinct, richer flavor
  • Raised without antibiotics or growth hormones
  • Free-range with access to natural sunlight and fresh air
  • Fed with natural, organic feed including herbs

Indigenous breeds like Kadaknath also have specific properties believed to offer health benefits according to Ayurvedic traditions.

Which chicken breed is best for my needs?

The best breed depends on your specific requirements:

Kadaknath: Known for its black meat, high protein, low cholesterol, and medicinal properties. Ideal for health-conscious consumers and those following specific dietary regimens.

Aseel: Offers lean, muscular meat with an intense flavor profile, perfect for traditional Indian dishes that require firm texture and rich taste.

Ghagus: A dual-purpose breed excellent for both meat and eggs with tender meat and adaptability to various climates.

We recommend contacting our team for personalized advice based on your specific culinary or nutritional needs.

How should I cook your chicken for the best flavor?

Wala chicken has a different cooking profile compared to commercial broilers:

  • Slow cooking methods work best to tenderize the meat and develop flavor
  • Traditional Indian cooking techniques like marination with yogurt or spices help enhance tenderness
  • Pressure cooking works well for faster preparation
  • For curries, a longer simmer time allows the rich flavors to develop
  • For Kadaknath specifically, avoid overcooking to preserve its unique properties

We provide recipe cards with each order, and you can find more recipe ideas on our website or by contacting our in-house culinary advisor.

We never use antibiotics, growth hormones, or synthetic additives in our feed. Our chickens also have access to natural foraging areas where they can supplement their diet with insects, seeds, and plantsβ€”just as their ancestors did.

Our feed formulations are developed in collaboration with nutritionists and veterinarians specializing in indigenous poultry breeds.

How did WalaChicken get started?

WalaChicken was founded in 2018 by Rajiv Sharma, a third-generation farmer who was concerned about the decline of indigenous chicken breeds in India. After completing his agricultural studies, Rajiv returned to his family farm with a vision to revive traditional farming practices while creating a sustainable business model.

What started as a small operation with just 50 birds has now grown into a network of partner farms across rural Maharashtra. Our founding principles remain the same: preserve indigenous breeds, practice ethical farming, support rural livelihoods, and provide consumers with healthier, tastier alternatives to industrial chicken.

You can read more about our journey on our About Us page.
